This game isn't as infuriatingly difficult as reviews led me to expect

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:16 AM PDT

I've looked at getting this game quite a few times now. But whenever I look up reviews or tips for new players, it talks about how difficult it is to get into, and how much Henry sucks at everything. This all really turned me off the game, as someone who doesn't like getting upset or bored in games, and I've never been a fan of survival mechanics either. But the other day I finally decided to get the game... And I'm loving it! It's really fun, and even just a few hours in (just went rabbit hunting) I don't feel like I really suck all that much. I'm no Robin Hood or master swordsman, but I'm generally capable of handling myself, and every review I saw led me to expect otherwise. Very glad I got this game!

    I love this game, but..

The architecture is spot on, the landscape is beautiful, but the voice acting is too American and it ruins it for me. Especially father Goodwin, and his questline.

The Cause of guards searching Henry.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:25 PM PDT

So since the game came out one of the discussions I've seen most was whether or not the guards searching was a bug why it happened to some and not others and so on. I've seen back and forths about whether it's rep, your conspic., hidden bounty, whether yove stolen, a bug and so on.

The one thing I've never seen mentioned in all those threads, was what I came to believe the real reason you're searched actually is. Your faith. To explain, it appears the game has a behind the scenes faith system, as I'm sure many know, when you commit a bad deed, you essentially lose faith, nothing tells you this, except your ability to now pay alms/repent at the church. Not doing so I noticed results in a higher conspic. level for Henry. Thus explaining the correlation between people thinking your conspic., actually contributed to getting searched.

The most common solution "pre-patch and now" is to go to jail, but coincidentally though, doing so also resets your faith, in other words going to jail also acts as a repentance, as you no longer have the option to pay at church after going to jail.

Obviously the wiki is very basic and doesn't go into much detail all the systems in the game, so I'd like to provide a synopsis of my testing.

What first got me interested in this issue was a tourney I was fighting getting abruptly halted mid battle by one of these searches at current patch, at which point I set out to fix/ get rid of this annoying issue, what I found were the threads and discussions I briefly mentioned above, but no one truly knew why, and warhorse had to actually add a patch in later to lessen the amount it happened from vanilla.

On this search I learned paying alms increases your rep, rep being one of the reasons people thought you were searched, despite objections to the contrary. Still I chose to go to jail first, at which point I'd pay my alms and get a decent rep boost, only I discovered I no longer needed to pay any alms after I got out of jail. At this point I was no longer getting searched and I didn't think nothing of it.

Until I got searched again, now I knew no one saw me commit a crime, and something else was going on, plus my conspic. Lvl had an extra +9 on it with no visible explanation... until I went to the church and paid my alms, at which point not only did the guards not stop me anymore, my conspic. +9 effect went away.

What got me to write this, is I was just recently stopped in rattay, I'd stolen nothing since the last time, but my conspic had a +, so I went to the church and had 100 grochen to pay in repentance when I remembered I accidently 1 hit the merc in the random encounter where he duels you. Thus a bad deed, thus my bad faith, thus the guard wants to search a sinful Henry.

How he knows, I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it's a hidden mechanic that tracks deeds and is then presumed that townsfolk and guards then take notice of Henry being more honorable/pious or if he's sinful. The latter meaning regardless of rep or anything else, Henry gets searched. To further test this I ran around town awhile and near guards to see if the search would happen again, as well as waited in the arena area for 24hrs (most common area you're searched) and it has not happened since I paid my alms.

Should I notice anything different I'll update this, and I apologize for the long read. With so much different info on this topic, and me having my own issues that delved me into it, I felt like I may have figured out just why this happens which prompted me to put this out there.

    Huge disappointment with this game

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:16 AM PDT

I finally got some free space on my hardrive to install this game ive been wanting to try for a long time because i am a medieval fanatic, and... it kinda sucks. Ive been playing it since yesterday, ive reached rattay and ive reached the part where you have to sparre the spoiled brat after training and i got frustrated by the artificial difficulty of the game. The combat is by far from what i have seen the worst part of this game, it is horrible and clunky and unnecessarily difficult, i get the whole henry being an untrained peasent and all and the game being about realism, but its really not realistic at all, you stab a bandit or looter 50 times and he still runs away full speed as if nothing happened to him, reverse the roles and henry would die with much less. The difficulty is really more artificial than anything, its made to seem complicated and hard but really its just the game making it more harder on you than it needs. That completely ruins the immersion and "realism" of the game, when you get too close to the opponent he grabs you and punches or kicks you whatever, ALWAYS. I feel like this is one of those games where they ironically made it frustrating and unrealistic by trying to make it "realistic". I get the whole you have to "train" a lot to gain experience and get better, but i just dont see myself wasting my time learning a virtual skill that adds nothing to me or my life other than that 5 second feeling of virtual accomplishment, specially when the main character is so ridiculously weak and slow. Id much rather spend hours learning a real life skill, like say, actual swordfighting or sparring and then play the game for fun, not the other way around. Overall the combat is just extremely frustrating, clunky, slow, and unrealistic. Other than that graphics, dialogs, story, quests seem pretty good, animations could be a little bit better too. 5/10
