Over-abundance of armor in the game

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 07:57 AM PDT

While I must admit I really like KCD overall, at least so far in my 50h playthrough, there's this little-big thing that bugs me. I started this topic in a comment, but I guess I might want to hear your, the broader audience, opinion as well. And maybe the solution, if there's any mod or overhaul for significantly tuning down the amount of armor every single poor rabble seems to be able to easily get.

The problem: the armor is too easy to get by the player, and is way way too common for the NPCs.

And it's considering both: gameplay mechanics or actual realism of the period. While players can easily fix their part, by simply ignoring it, there's very little incentive or reason to do so as a game punishes such an approach severely. As not only full military-grade chainmail protection seems to be dirt cheap, available and maintainable not only to an actual army man, but city guards, or even forest brigand. What's worse those forest dwellers actually run a full plate armor sets themselves. With how combat works from a gameplay point of view the Light Armor perk brings not nearly enough to excuse parting with the heavier protection handed like candies, as it's not possible to "outdance" several combatants, neither to outparry, neither to be quicker in attacks sequences or whatnot. It actually helps only to... escape?

At the other side of the issue, the abundance of the heavy protection invalidates a great deal of weapons as well. While swords are cool and are easily a focus of the combat system, the heavy armor of many random encounters or bandits camps or quests battles makes a warhammer with shield an autopick to carry around at all times. And it's a real shame IMO, as it cuts the game to a very narrow viable path.

And, in effect, the game as a game just like as a narrative&theme suffers IMO. As the story of a lowborn boy is very fast to become a story of an unstoppable juggernaut any other fantasy game would hug.

And before someone argues about "realism" and how cloth protection should be ravaged by any knight, or how 1vx combat would also be unfavorable, please bear in mind that realism works both ways - you're right that a knight would hack through a typical Tommy from the village and his gambeson. But you're missing that those knights in their full armament were not a common sight even on the battlefields, and definitely not among raiders or bandits hacking a typical Tommy from the village and his gambeson. The Cumans are what mercs could wear, but they would be actually considered somewhat elite and really well-equipped mercs in the period. Personally I find Cumans to be that part of the opponents gallery who are balanced in the sweet spot - enough protection to believe they are an actual army, or to make the encounters interesting, but not enough to think they are a bunch of horribly bored horribly wealthy nobleman hanging around for kicks.

I hope this gets a solid rebalance in the next instance of the game.

Edit: a photo of a bandit from a forest random encounter; there were 4 such guys in this spot. If I haven't a full plate armor already I'd be fully equipped with a single combat.

The combat in this game (I put meme because i couldn’t find proper flair and it’s quite comical)

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 08:46 AM PDT

So I've just gotten to the point where I consider myself a damn good swordsman and just fought off two heavily armed and armored bandits in a random encounter only to get finessed by some peasant boy with a club who kept thumping my noggin and draining my stamina. Laughed quite hard tbh anyone else had this happen to them?

    Coming back to this game

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 07:44 AM PDT

I finished KCD in January. It was one of the best games I ve ever played, but now I can't find a game with as great story and gameplay as in this game. So there is my question: should I play this game once again from the beggining or is it going to ruin my previous experience? I want to know opinion from people who did.

My experience with Runt the Bandit. (Possible Spoilers)

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 09:05 AM PDT

Ive get to the final battle with Runt and I kill him immediately with a master blow and Im mean withen 3 seconds. My Henry has pretty high strength and Ive invested in the knockout ability. But after black peter killed me about 28 times in the tourney/ambush I was disappointed I didnt get more of a challenge.

Game pass and the quarintine brought me to this game and I love it so far, just hope that my combat doesnt remain easy due to my irregularly high strength.

    Confusion about Combat

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:11 PM PDT

So it feels like I'm missing something with this games combat and I'm about ready to pack it in. Armoured enemies seem to break the games mechanics. My current situation:

    1. Combat feels like it takes way too long against armoured foes. Its forcibly yanking camera control from me lurches the view around, not normally a problem but in a lengthy bout disorienting and slightly nauseating me.
    2. Enemies are able to chain several hits in a row, but even when they are hit and staggered I cannot do the same and they perfect parry/riposte immediately after the first hit lands.
    3. Armoured enemies parry almost every strike, relative timing, weapon positioning, riposte, stagger etc do not appear to matter - going against things the tutorial explicitly teaches you to expect to work. A very few fast stabs do get through but when this happens appears to be random and not relating to when the enemies guard appears to be down.
      1. Against armoured enemies these attacks appears to sometimes inflict damage, either this is at random or via some mechamism you're not told about. From the wya they move the enemies do not appear to be using the same stamina mechanics as I am.
    4. Ripost appears broken, parry/riposte attacks almost always get parried by armoured foes, or deal no damage. These are often unblockably riposted in turn.
    5. I almost always lose clinches and cannot reliably initiate them. Half the time I hammer the button and nothing happens, giving the foe a few easy hits.
    6. Damage appears broken, sometimes hits deal damage, sometimes they do not. The reason for this is not clear, I have heard it is tied to stamina but sometimes take damage at full stamina?
    7. Fleeing/aggro range appears broken, enemies once aggroed pursue you to the ends of the earth, ignoring other threats to focus on you and only you.

This is after training in the arena and being able to easily take down unarmoured enemies. It seems to be something to do with the interaction between armour and possibly the skill of the oponents?

I am finding this is making the game crushingly boring. It's not so much the difficulty - I wouldn't mind if it was Souls-Like hard, but when each fight takes so long and an encounter might have five dudes to grind down one by one... then the fifth guy gets in a lucky shotsequence and you're done for.

Am I doing something wrong or is the combat in this game just godawful once you get past the intro? I get they were going for realism and it seems like it works for unarmoured bandits and the first few hours of the game. But when every fight with armoured fors is a drawn out, seemingly RNG chore I find myself not caring enoug to continue. Which is a shame as the rest of the game I'm really enjoying. It just feels lazy, like they designed the combat first and added the armour after

I mean, it's not even that realistic, these guys are in basic chain and brig, that does not grant invulnerability to a dozen sword strikes that I can see went through the unprotected front of the helmet....

TLDR: How on earth do you quickly deal with opponents in armour?

Caveat: I am not willing to sit for hours grinding the training bouts over and over. I have finite free time and tedious, repetitive grind in games is a 100% hard no for me.

    Black Peter is a Jerk

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:51 AM PDT

So after my bout with Black Peter in the tourney I thought I'd continue the quest line with Theresa before starting her dlc, but as I was going for a walk with her that asshole black Peter ambushes us. Luckily it wasn't too bad due to me having the head cracker perk, I knocked him out almost instantly and yanked all his equipment. But as he woke up he still remained hostile forcing me to kill him. Theresa was not happy with this and alerted the bailiff causing me to ultimately get arrested for Murder, I guess self-defense is non-existent in Bohemia...

Radzig just sent Henry to infiltrate the Bandit/Cumin camp (Viper's Nest). Is this an OK time to deviate and do side quests or does it need to be done soon?

While I enjoyed From the Ashes, it definitely felt like the most rushed DLC (spoilers all)

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 11:27 AM PDT

I guess I'm annoyed because I got really into the quest to begin with, and got invested in saving up money and choosing what to build, and then having finished it, I never had any reason to go back to Pribyslavitz ever again, except maybe to pick up my cash, which I no longer need because I've already done the only particularly expensive thing in the game. Moreover, the whole experience is pretty shallow. For example...

    • I don't even get a fucking house. Instead, I share a room in the Ratthaus with a couple of random NPCs. Are you kidding? Why would I ever bother sleeping there when I have a private room at Rattay and my own goddamn lodge in Talmburg?
    • Limited amenities. I see what they were doing by forcing you to choose between certain shops, but even allowing for this, there are some pretty disappointing omissions. A tailor, for example, would have been really helpful. And if you specialise in either armoursmith or swordsmith (as you're encouraged to do) you lose the ability to sell weapons or armour to them respectively. And how about a cobbler, a tanner, a scribe, an apothecary, a herbalist, or a grocer? Or even just building more houses to get more residents? I get that it's meant to be a small village in the woods, but fuck, I have money, let's go.
    • Very little customisation. Basically everyone's village looks the same. How about you let me choose the name of the Inn? Or pick a fresco for the church? Or choose whether the tavern will specialise in wine or beer? Or whether the trader will focus on low prices or a wide selection? Or whether to plant flowers in the village or keep it neatly trimmed? Or let me choose the decor for my goddamn house that you should have given me? Anything to make it less generic.
    • It feels lazy and incomplete. No one in the village seems to acknowledge that you're the bailiff. "Who do you think you are, walking around without a light?" I'm the fucking bailiff, you moron. Likewise, there's no Pribyslavitz-specific banter among NPCs that I've heard. Even a few overheard dialogues about "It's good to be here after leaving Rattay - now I don't have to beg" would have warmed my stony heart.
    • The 'specialist' quests were frankly bizarre. Who on earth would ever have guessed that Mirka and Raspberry were NPCs you could hire, without either stumbling on them by sheer good luck or else looking at a wiki? They have tiny roles even in the quests they're a part of, and their involvement can be sidestepped entirely. For example, I'd never spoken to Raspberry in my game before I wander up to him and ask "want a job?". Why couldn't I get some of the Skalitz beggars from Rattay to come? And what's with the option to ask Huntsman Nicholas to come and be Huntsman of your village, when that's not a role that can be filled by anyone?
    • Very little interactivity. I actually kind of enjoyed the Judgement questline while it lasted, but it was painfully simple - just a bunch of dialogue options. Couldn't I have some actual Pribyslavitz related quests? Maybe the Cumans raid the village and I have to defend it. Maybe I have to break up a tavern brawl. Maybe a charlatan comes to town and I have to threaten or trick them into leaving. There could even be some fun procedural quests. Perhaps my trader wants help finding some rare items, and I have to procure them an example so they subsequently have it in stock, or the guards want to conduct a raid on the bandits hiding out in Skalitz. Anything to make the place feel a bit lively and active.
    • Very little interaction with the rest of the game. "Hey Theresa, guess what, I'm the bailiff of Pribyslavitz. Want to come and check out the bedroom I share with three other people?" Nope. Not even that. Aside from one reference in the Madonna of Sasau quest, there are almost no mentions made anywhere in the main game or even the other DLCs about the fact you're now bailiff of a village. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could have gotten some of your guards to help with Siege of Talmburg? But nope, as far as most of the rest of the game is concerned, Pribyslavitz doesn't exist.
    • Not many unique items. Okay, the new horses are nice, and there's a decent new bow, sword, and shield. Plus the special beer. And the number of unique items in the other DLC is even worse. But still, how hard would it have been to include a few more reskinned maces, or honey cakes, or a unique pourpoint? Or a fucking bailiff's hat. I wanted a hat.
