The save system really isn't very good.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 03:31 AM PDT

Ok, I'm a scrub, I need to git gud, this probably has been said before, but I feel like ranting.

Bought a new bow from a huntsman, received some training, and in the end he even gave me a quest. Catch some nightingales just outside of town. I got the directions, but found myself on the wrong side of the river. Went along it to the south to see if I could find somewhere to cross, but didn't, so had to backtrack to the town. Having finally crossed the bridge, I was on my way. All of a sudden there was a tree blocking the road. I turned and fled at first, but decided not to be a pussy, and to my relief, all my training yesterday paid off, and the world had two less assholes.
By the time I reached the bird spot, it was getting late, but hey, they're probably called nightingales for a reason, so I went on with the mission. Listened for the song, placed the traps, noticed a bandit camp but managed to avoid them. As I was working, I let the dog hunt hares. Having placed the third trap, I went back to the first to check it, and bingo! It had sprung. Now to fetch number two.
This time I wasn't so lucky with the bandits. They assaulted me, but with some help from the dog, I actually managed to kill the three attackers! Awesome. I went to the camp, there were two more. One who fled and one who slept. I'm not one to kill people in their sleep, so I let him be, and went to pick up the final trap. Job well done, some serious excitement was had along the way.

TL;DR: A great chapter in the life of Henry/me. A story to tell the grandchildren. But it wasn't over yet. On the way back, two bandits tried to assault me, but I galloped away. Just ten seconds later, a gang of five. This time I wasn't so lucky, the unhorsed me, and I didn't even get to draw my sword. Game over. Well, I'll just load the save - wait, the last one is from when I got the quest.

So, the great story I'd spent the last hour experiencing, is now erased. I have to do it again, but this time I'll be clinical about it. I'm now painfully aware of the save system, playing my game around it. The fourth wall has been breached.

Before this, I did the bathhouse story. That one has autosaves, I guess because it would be annoying to start all over. Why can't the game be more consistent about this?

The creators seem to lean towards a "tough love" school of thought, where things that makes the game easier is somehow seen as also making it less realistic. An argument can be made that life back then was no walk in the park, and that the save system makes you have to think of this. Learn things instead of savescumming. But when you make a single player story driven RPG, the prime goal must be to try to give the player an immersive experience. It doesn't matter if in hindsight my avatar acted very true to life, if it didn't feel real to me. Real life has no save games. Making the player consider the save game system all the time is immersion breaking.

    Another Reputation Thread

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:18 AM PDT

There's loads of these spread out across Steam, reddit, wherehaveyou, but few of them seem to address one big thing.

A lot of users say you should wait a few in-game hours before reputation rises, others say it should be near instant. Does anyone know the proper details for this reputation system? I've been sitting on 24 Rep in Uhzitz for a long while now, and with no further quests in the town available, I'm getting worried that I'm just sorta doomed.

Me when I find my first dead Cuman

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 04:30 PM PDT

I ran into a poacher deep in Rattay woods, was contemplating if it is right to kill him. Seeing this has helped me decide.

    A unique problem (new player)

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:15 AM PDT

Basically I'm at the part I rode my horse away from the Cumans and now the lord won't let me leave the castle.

On the rainy night before I went up to the battlements I found a sleeping soldier and took all of his armour and became overencumbered.

Now my mission is to get out and the lady says just take some armour which I already have (nice).

With that done the optional objective is to take the horse. I found the horse that doesn't count as stealing and I tried to get on but I couldn't because I'm overencumbered.

The game handily says "just move some items to your horse's inventory" but I think because I don't technically "own" the horse yet that inventory is inaccessible and I can't transfer anything to it.

I tried dropping everything then getting on the horse and then picking it all back up but I still couldn't access the inventory. I think perhaps some sort of cutscene will occur when I leave and afterwards I will have full ownership of the mount.

So basically I'm trapped in the castle and ideally I would like to leave with the horse and all the equipment. Please can you help me?

Can I go back for the horse another time?

    Thanks for your help guys!

    Runt

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Just got around to killing Runt on my hardcore playthrough, all negative debuffs where I am only using longswords. It took me an hour just to kill the guy using Saving Grace despite completely dominating him the whole fight. Long swords are definitely not the recommended weapon for killing armored foes. My sword went from full durability to 0 in that fight. I can only imagine how long the higher level fights are going to take without my mace.
